About Miguel López-Castillo

Miguel was born in Mexico City, to a family that was operatic both in training and temperament. Although accepted to engineering, architecture and fine art programs by various universities, he chose to study at Parsons School of Design in New York. An MFA in Set Design from Tisch School of the Arts followed.

In a career spanning over twenty five years, he has worked in theatre and opera for important designers and directors such as George Tsypin, Neil Jampolis, Peter Sellars, Francesca Zambello and Pierre Audi. He developed a strong and artistic film sensibility working as an art director with Jeannine Oppewall, David Gropman, Mark Friedberg, Bob Shaw and Howard Cummings. Nominated for multiple Art Directors Guild and Emmy awards, he was on the winning teams for "Catch Me If You Can" and "Mr Robot', Season 2.

"Whenever someone asks about my earliest memory of seeing a movie in a theater, the answer is ‘Battleship Potemkin,’ when I was seven years old. I couldn't put that genie back in the bottle. My background in art and architecture, and working experience in stagecraft, have informed my style as a Production Designer. The goals of my process are to pursue authenticity, materials exploration, visual storytelling, and artful world creation in collaboration with directors and cinematographers. I particularly enjoy developing a character's untold backstory, grounding their environment with elements of memory, research and the borrowed details from daily life that allow us to create perfect illusions."
